SERVICES AND TECHNIQUES
Chiropractic Care
At Elevated Living Chiropractic, you are provided with a variety of different techniques to more accurately assess and best treat your specific case. First of all, chiropractic care assesses the entire spine looking for specific areas that may have motion restrictions, also known as segmental dysfunctions. When one area of the spine is not moving properly like it should, other areas above and below will compensate by moving excessively. The spine provides protection for the spinal cord and nerve roots emerge from each individual segment of the spine. The segmental dysfunctions can irritate your joints, muscles, and nerves.
A functional examination identifies which segments need to be corrected by an adjustment. The primary method of adjusting will include a gentle pressure and soft thrust to restore proper motion of the specific segment. An adjustment is sometimes accompanied a popping sound which is just a release of a gas bubble within the joint. On occasion, other methods of adjusting may be used to better suit the patients needs. Activator adjusting utilizes an instrument to supply a much higher velocity with significantly less force, while table-assisted adjusting is very similar. Both additional techniques are very effective and may be necessary for the patients overall comfort.
Chiropractic care is a safe and cost effective alternative to surgery or opioid usage. Our newer correction methods are even safer, more comfortable and more effective than ever before. As a doctor of chiropractic, Dr. Devon has had extensive training and experience in spinal adjustment.
Active Release Technique (ART)
ART is a patented, state of the art soft tissue system/movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.
Over-used muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways:
- acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc)
- accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
- not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia)
Each of these factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons causes tendonitis, and nerves can become trapped. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness.
ART is much more specific than a massage and more gentle than commonly performed trigger point therapies. The clinician will evaluate texture, tightness and movement of individual muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.Active release techniques (ART) attempt to address problems in individual tissues, since one tissue or structure can affect another structure both directly and biomechanically. With this method, the chiropractor identifies problems with movement, pressure and adhesions between the nearby tissues, and then addresses them.
Functional Rehabilitation
Funtional rehabilitation is essential throughout the entirety of the patient’s care plan. In most cases, the patients pain can be caused by improper stress or loading on certain areas of the body due to either postural abnormalities or poor motor pattern function. It’s these two things that can lead to build up of weak and fibrotic(scar) tissue, which can eventually cause episodes of pain.
During the early stages of a treatment plan, we will be providing the patient with basic exercises or stretches that will allow them to further progress outside of our clinic and regain motions that may have been lost over time. As we move up in the care plan, ranges of motion improve and acute pain becomes less of a concern, we can begin to assess where there might be biomechanical weaknesses that have been building to what could be or is a chronic issue. Many times, these subtle incorrect adaptations that our body has gotten used to have led to weakness in essential areas of the body and overuse in other areas. A great example of this would be someone who has chronic low back and extremely limited hip range of motion. The low back will compensate for the bending at the hips and then we can see the overuse cycle of the low back come into effect.
Implementing correct functional movements will be essential in the patients care plan. The late stages of treatment focus on regaining your optimal health. Once the patients have begun to move correctly and efficiently, we can provide exercises that will help our patients not only remain pain free but excel in doing activities that they may have not been able to do for some amount of time. Our goal is to see all our our patients not only be pain free, but to move well and move often.
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)
IASTM is another effective way to break up scar tissue buildup and fascial restrictions. The clinician will first identify where there are areas of soft tissue dysfunction caused by fascial restrictions or fibrous adhesions. Then, by using one of several different shaped instruments, the clinician will apply the tool to the skin of the affected area with a specific amount of pressure. The instrument will then comb over fibrotic areas and break down adhesions so that they may be absorbed by the body. Studies have shown that IASTM can provide significant improvements in ranges of motion, strength and pain perception following treatment.
Lifepro Whole Body Vibration
Whole body vibration has been shown to have many benefits.
Increased blood circulation
Studies have proved that vibrations increase blood flow to the legs and make the heart healthier overall. A better blood circulation also means a faster tissue healing, so it is constantly recommended by physiotherapists.
Boosted muscular strength
In case you didn’t know, lifting isn’t the only thing that will get you to increase your muscle strength. Vibration therapy helps too. Your muscles contract 30 to 50 times per second when you stand on a vibration plate, which strengthens and increases the muscle’s tissue. It also improves balance, mobility and flexibility.
Improved athletic performance
Athletes tend to add vibration therapy to their regular training sessions. It helps them get stronger, decrease soreness and prevent muscle injuries.
Disruption of pain signals
As previously mentioned, physiotherapists recommend using vibration plates, not only to heal their patients’ injuries, but also to decrease the amount of pain they are in. The vibrations that go through the body, send signals to the brain so that it can cause a sense of comfort and alleviate soreness. It has been found that it helps patients with arthritis and osteoporosis.
Raises your metabolism
Vibrations help you body exercise, and exercise raises your metabolism. The stronger you get, the more energy you use. This will cause your body to burn calories and fat faster, which will result in a faster metabolism.
Makes you happier
Vibration therapy helps with hormone release. It’ll get your body to produce more serotonin, the hormone that makes you happy, and less cortisol, the one that makes you feel stressed and anxious.
Increases energy levels
This is a direct result of better circulation. A higher blood flow means more oxygen flowing through your body and a lower blood pressure, which will make you feel more energized.
